From Midnight howler to contented kitty: An inside peek at an animal communication session
Hello Dear Intuitive One,
Maybe it’s left over from offering massage therapy for 20 years, but telling anyone what happens inside of the animal communication sessions I offer - isn’t my style. It’s important to me that you know that what you share is private.
But… this month my writing coach, Lauren VanMullem (who by the way I highly recommend to my intuitive - witchy based business who need copywriting help. You can find her business here) gave me the chance to not only talk with her cat, Jinx, but also gave me carte blanche permission to write about the session so you can have a peek inside a real session. Amazing! Thanks Lauren! :)
Image: With her silken black fur and witchy green eyes, Lauren’s Sassy girl Jinx, is beyond gorgeous. She loves to hang out upside down and push the boundaries between domestic house goddess and wild feral huntress.
Here’s why Lauren set up an animal communication session…
Jinx (pictured above), has been keeping Lauren awake at night with a howl that can slice right through your brain for 30 seconds straight - just enough to make sure you are fully alert. And then stop. Only to start up again an hour later. Understandably, Lauren wanted help to make THAT stop so she could finally get some sleep.
With goals set, I led Lauren through the simple grounding meditation to focus in on her heartspace and send Jinx a love note to tell her the session was happening and to give her permission to talk with us.
Here’s what Jinx had to share about her howling
In the session, Jinx shared being particularly bonded with Lauren’s secret Feral side of her personality and considered it her job to make sure that Lauren’s Feral side is as activated as possible. Jinx shared that she just doesn’t understand the civilized side of Lauren yet, and, if it was up to her, they would be living in the mountains, catching their own food and rolling around in the dirt.
“I’m aware that I’m a domesticated cat and that Lauren is a domesticated human. And yet I see Lauren too often just going through the motions! We need more feral in our life. There’s too much NON-feral living happening around here. Lauren eats off a plate!”

More from Jinx and Lauren….
Lauren confirmed that just 3 days prior to her session that she had shared with a friend that FERAL FORTIES is her theme for the next decade! She loves that Jinx is so quintessentially herself, gives zero fucks, and is living her best wild kitty life — always up to play, bite and pounce. The feral aspect of Lauren that Is very attracted to those “feral” traits in Jinx. So far everything was feeling 110 percent right.
As Jinx snuggled up on Lauren’s lap, she continued to share her feelings about what she was responding to with all the midnight howling... and like most animals I communicate with, her emotions around it were complex and layered.
Jinx shared feeling very bored at night,
Wanting to go outside, but knowing it’s not safe to do so (you know because coyotes and racoons!),
She shared feeling a bit abandoned and not understanding why Lauren, her feral buddy is not staying up with her - and living a “natural” nocturnal way of life.
She also shared big complicated feelings around getting praise for being wild during the day, but confused that when she was doing some of her best play moves at night, Lauren wasn’t even getting up to look at her!
And this complicated, sassy girl, Jinx, was pouring all these feelings and confusion into those soul shattering midnight howls that were keeping Lauren awake at night.
Helping Lauren and Jinx create harmony
What’s so wonderful about animal communication is how it helps us to understand what’s going on with our animal friends.
It’s NOT about controlling them or telling them to stop voicing their needs because of the inconvenience it causes us.
The ways I work with animal communication is about listening to how they are experiencing their life and what feels in and out of alignment for them so we can help create harmony. It’s about finding a way to create a win for everyone.
Being able to hear about what Jinx was feeling and needing went a long way in understanding her midnight howling as a response to something, rather than just shitty behavior. It also gave us the ability to brainstorm with her to find tools and solutions that would work for her and give her what she needs to make better choices. This included:
Jinx approved Toys: Based on what Jinx had been sharing, I suggested Lauren buy a few new special “nighttime only” only cat toys that would transform the quiet dark and boring vibe Jinx described she felt in the house at night into her own private rave.
Filling Jinx’s emotional cup to the brim before bed with the right kind of compliments: One of the things that Jinx shared in the session was just how much she loves and needs praise from Lauren. She specifically shared her craving and need to be praised for her domesticated aspects of her personality which she called her, “inside wise cat wisdom”. Jinx shared that she felt that this special kind of praise would help balance all the praise she received from Lauren for being so wild, playful and… feral.
Success! No more midnight howling!!!
Here’s what Lauren writes about the outcome from their session…
“Nearly 2 weeks later, there hasn't been any more midnight howling. Jinx hasn't woken us up ONCE since our call. We got motion-activated toys to help with boredom (laser beam is the clear winner, the bouncing ball with tail comes in second), and giving her extra attention before bedtime helps a lot. Plus complimenting her 'inside, wise cat' moments, because you're right, she really thrives on praise.” -Lauren
Thanks for tuning in with me today,
P.S. Is your animal friend challenging you beyond your limits with challenging behaviors? Set up a session to talk with them so you can hear their take on what is going on for them and what they feel they need to feel happy again.
“Joanna was amazing at interpreting the very different communication styles of our cats. I'm so happy we had the chance to hear what the essence of our companions are and what they need to thrive and grow together.”
