How to create the space to listen inward

Let your mind go blank - a guide map for dropping in and listen to your intuition

Plus: We’ll put it into action with a conversation to help you intuitively hear your animals more clearly

If you’d rather listen…

Hello Dear Intuitive One

There is this moment just before every animal communication session (and intuitive session) when my mind goes uncomfortably blank.

This momentary mind blank and the accompanying mini panic happens right before I open sacred space to work, before I anchor into my body and the present moment, before I light a candle, call on my spirit helpers and allies and begin.

It’s also right before this moment of panic that hits, that I have to get in front of it. Or it will consume me. If the self-doubt and self-consciousness that arises in that ‘blank’ moment wins, I won’t be clear and the magic of being able to hear the animals or connect with humans and spirits won’t happen.

Opening space for any kind of intuitive work is important, even if you're a novice. So many trainings will tell you to focus, but I believe opening space is more about arriving in your body with intention, being present for what is. For anyone with performance anxiety, this step is really hard.

This mind blank used to freak me out because all of my inner gremlins would use the stillness within me to chime in, really loudly. Like:

  • "You have NO idea what you’re doing, you’re going to fail."

  • "There is NO way this is going to work again."

  • And... "You might as well get out now, before you f&#! this up.".

In the decades of offering this work, I've come to realize that letting my mind go blank is 100% necessary for the non-linear work I do. This process is similar to the creative process. Getting from a blank page or canvas to knowing what is ready to become.

With any kind of intuitive work, it’s not our minds that help us to hear animals' feelings or sense what they feel in their bodies; it’s not our minds that help us sense all the wonderful things we can pick up with our intuitive antennae. Our minds also don't help us listen with neutrality, free of judgment and free from the desire to fix.

Sure, the mind helps us make sense of it all, but with intuitive work, it’s not our mind’s job to run the show, no matter how many ways it tries to tell us otherwise, and no matter how heady we get and hard we try to *think our way through* our intuitive process. Intuition just isn’t a mind thing.

It’s a fully in our body and breathing thing.

It’s a wickedly here in the present moment thing.

It’s a tapping into our heart-sense and witchy knowing thing.

It’s all of these things. And in truth, I totally used to dread this moment of mental stillness because when it first arrives it's NOT at all comfortable. It's a vulnerable and super uneasy feeling of NOT knowing. And to do my work well, I have to surrender to it.

A mini ceremony to open sacred space to listen inward

If you tend to get stuck in your head or struggle with the mind blank panic, when trying to shift gears to tune-in with the non-linear realms of intuition, I invite you to tune in with me for a moment with a mini practice of sensing into the layers of natural boundaries all around you.

This practice can feel so heavenly when you're feeling anxious or stressed out. It’s also a very suitable way to open sacred space for your intuitive work. You can find the full version of this practice, in my second book, “When Spirit and Earth Meet, creating a new kind of boundary for remaining connected in daily life ”. You can get your copy here

Let’s tune-in now….

I invite you to settle into the here and now of this moment. Perhaps place a hand on your heart and a hand on your belly to mark this moment as sacred time to tune-in.

Breathe to be in your body.

Sense into the strength and flexibility of your body.

Sense into the boundary of what is supporting your physical body.

Sense into the physical structure of the room you are in right now. Sense into the sturdiness of the walls, the roof above your head.

Sense into the more subtle layers of boundaries that support you from above and from below earth and sky… as you sense these subtle boundaries, be sure to stay in your body, stay in your own center by sensing the movement of your breath and feeling the support offered by your seat and the structure that supports you.

Next, zoom back into the feeling of holding your heart and belly in your hands in kindness.

Tap into the feeling of being physically, energetically, spiritually supported by these layers of natural boundaries, in front of you, behind you to the right of you, to the left of you and from your toes to your divine crown.

Give yourself permission to allow these boundaries to do a little bit more of the work of holding you up.

Give yourself permission to receive this support

Perhaps invite a little bit more of your energy, presence and your spirit into this moment to be held in grace, kindness and love by these layers and layers of loving, supportive boundaries.

To finish this tuning in, rest your hands, and give yourself a moment to sense into how different the room feels, how much more present and centered you feel and remember that this centered feeling is always accessible to you, always.

Did you enter into the blank?

Let’s circle back to the mind blank that happens just before the intuitive magic unfolds

I’ve learned that knowing how to open sacred space, how to anchor into the here and now and how to trust the body, breath, and witchy sense of how intuition works makes this mind blank panic less panicky and much more easeful.

Personally, these days I welcome it, all of it, even the discomfort of it. I've come to see it as a kind of still point between here and there, a momentary fleeting rite of passage between the thinking, linear space of the everyday - to the nonlinear heart space of the extra-sensory reality. I wait for it and linger as long as possible now.

Oh! And there are far fewer gremlins in this moment of mental stillness too. I've given them permission to rest and, for the *most part*, they've listened. :)

Animal Communication Talk

Let’s chat about that pesky habit of trying to THINK your way through figuring out what your animals are trying to say

So many folks struggle to hear their animals intuitive voice because they get stuck in what they THINK their animal is trying to say. The human mind has its own specialty of getting in our way when we try to listen with our heart, breath and body!

If this is something you struggle with (and you’ll know because when you try to tune-in with your animal you’ll feel all heady, like all of your energy is in your forehead and you’ll say things like, “I THINK he is trying to tell us about…. “or “I THINK she is wanting more of….”)

Remember that thinking and intuitive telepathy are two VERY different things. Thinking is math and spelling. Intuitive telepathy is watery, dream-like inner body-heart-soul sensing.

One way around this mind trap is to drop into your own body first, just like we did in the practice a few moments ago. This dropping into your center isn’t easy, as there are often closets full of inner whatnot that we have to sort, sift and release before it’s comfortable in there! . That's where the intuitive breakthrough sessions I offer can really support you in getting as clear as possible. And when you are able to drop in to your body, and through the mind blank, it is SO much easier to hear and sense your animal’s world from their perspective.

Thanks for tuning in with me today,

XO

Joanna
